I lived half my life just a short drive from these mines and never knew about them until recently returning to the area with my kids to visit our family. This is a really neat place with a fascinating history. The area itself tucked up against the hills of western NJ along the Delaware River is breathtaking. The tour of the mines is long but includes a stop in the museum, a special room with flourescent rocks, and then you go deep into the actual mine. Our tour guide was really knowledgeable. The kids had a great time, and I felt like I had some insight into my great grandfather's life as a miner just over the rive in Pennsylvania.
Great place to visit even in the middle of winter. The florescence in the rock lighting up is truly amazing. Memorable experience.
Super fun trip! I went here for my Geology class, and it was really cool. There's a lot of different features (the museum, the mine tour, mining area, the scattered artifacts of the mine) and all of them are intriguing, both for the people who know some about geology, and those who don't. Great for kids old enough to walk, and adults. If I was able to, I would've stayed the whole day. (Plus, the whole place is really scenic as well!)
The World Famous Sterling Hill Mine Tour & Museum of Fluorescence, is a former iron and zinc mine in Ogdensburg, Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. It was the last working underground mine in New Jersey when it closed in 1986. It is now a museum and a MUST SEE for the whole family! Nearby is the Franklin Mine, it is known for its variety of minerals, especially the fluorescent varieties. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
What an incredible place. The tour of the museum is enough to make any collector drool, but when you throw in a tour of the mine, and then a "blackout" tour (total darkness with just a few handheld UV lights to make the walls glow.) it's even more amazing. And don't forget to bring a bucket or six, because $1.50 a pound for raw minerals from all over the world is really great! If you are interested in geology, rock collecting, or even just how stuff works, and how those things are involved in so many factors of your life, do yourself a favor and come spend the day here.
